The life and experiences of Newfoundland heritage is manifested in every nuance of Thomas Hutchings ‘Newfoundland Chess Set’. Created in clay, sculptured and slip cast, bisque fired, then hand painted ensuring the realistic integrity of each character. As a refection of Newfoundland culture, each piece encompasses a specific aspect thereof. The Pawn foot soldier is represented by the fisherman who was always the most expendable, last and least to be paid. The Rook, cornerstone of the kingdom, becomes the barrel of fish. Traditionally, fish embodied the life and very existence of the Newfoundland way of life. Wars were fought over these barrels. The Knight is symbolized by the sturdy Newfoundland pony. It's indentured service to the fisherman, venerates the pony as a great parallel to the noble knight. The Bishop, whose office and status commands respect, is represented as the shopkeeper. The lives of the fishermen were dependent on the kindness and generosity of these keepers of the book.
